Vaginal Rejuvenation: It’s a Taboo Status Still Lingers Among Some Women

Since its introduction into society, cosmetic gynecology has gained a lot of popularity.  From being a strictly “hush-hush” topic, feminine procedures such as vaginal rejuvenation and labiaplasty are now more commonly requested from patients and even openly discussed by many.  Annual statistics have shown a steady increase in vaginal rejuvenation surgeries performed as more and more women embrace their bodies, choices and self-awareness. In 2002 the British Journal of Medicine did a study and reported that 40 percent of women in its sample population wanted to go through with “genital reconstruction” even after being told their labia were perfectly normal. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported that the number of patients undergoing labiaplasty rose 49 percent, from 5,070 surgeries in 2013 to 7,535 last year. And this is just labiaplasty!

For some, however, cosmetic vaginal surgery still remains in the taboo category, especially among Latinas.  One of the main reasons for this is that Hispanic women can often be more reluctant to discuss issues involving intimacy or incontinence, which are big motivators to have vaginal rejuvenation.  The idea of vaginal rejuvenation as a cosmetic procedure without any functional benefits seems to still be an accepted opinion in the Latina community.  The fact is, though, it’s not strictly cosmetic.

While it’s true that vaginal rejuvenation comes with many cosmetic perks including increased sexual gratification, it’s also true that the procedure can provide some functional benefits as well (see our blog post entitled Vaginal Rejuvenation: Not Just An Aesthetic Procedure).  In short, vaginal rejuvenation can help address weakened vaginal muscles commonly associated with childbirth and the aging process improving muscle tone and control.

As we focus on women’s health and wellbeing at the Women’s Wellness Institute of Dallas, we encourage our patients to engage in candid discussions about any “intimate” issues that may be troubling them.  We believe that women should feel empowered and educated about their sexuality and their bodies!  Many women are simply unaware that they have options and that vaginal rejuvenation or labiaplasty can be a viable solution to helping them get on the path to a healthy, more satisfying sexual and emotional relationship. Dr. Brady specializes in counseling women on their choices and available methods to address their needs.  Through these cosmetic vaginal surgeries, she has helped thousands of women in the Dallas area and around the world regain confidence in themselves and in the bedroom!
